a. Army Aviation: Throughout the duration of the operation extensive use was made of the brigade’s organic UH1H and OH-58 helicopters, and UH1H and CH-47 helicopters requested from the 101st Ambl Div. One UH1H and 1 OH-58 were requested on a daily basis averaging two to three hours of utilization daily. The aircraft were used primarily for Recon/Killer insertions and extractions, visual reconnaissance of suspected enemy locations and command and coordination missions by the commander and staff members. A total of fourteen company size trooplifts were conducted by CH-47 for a total of 22 sorties. The AH1G “Cobra” gunships provided air cover and close fire support for Recon/Killer operations and in support of maneuver elements in contact with enemy forces. Emergency medical evacuations were flown by the 237th Aero-Ambulance Company attached to the brigade. Numerous evacuations of a non-emergency category were accomplished by the use of the operations aircraft. A high degree of cooperation by supporting elements of Army Aviation aided greatly in the accomplishment of this unit’s assigned mission |
